The invention relates to a method and a device for an improved block control for the reliable and economic control of a train along a rail system. The device comprises a mechanism for specifying a route of the train, a mechanism for assigning a power supply section along the specified route of the train to a desired substation, a mechanism for locking an assigned power supply section to a desired substation and for preventing this assignment being cleared before prespecified conditions apply, a mechanism for specifying a direction of travel of the train along the assigned power supply section and a mechanism for controlling the operation of the train along a specified control route. The invention also relates to a mechanism for extending a control route, a mechanism for unlocking the assigned power supply sections and substations, a mechanism for testing a fixed control route, a mechanism for changing the limits of a power supply section and a mechanism for optionally transmitting received data to the correct substation in order to simplify the control of the train.
