The invention describes a belt grinding unit which can be attached to mechanical machines and connected to their work spindle, having an endless grinding belt (3) which is guided over axially parallel deflection rollers (1, 2) and on the inner side of which is arranged a pressure shoe (7) which is arranged centrally actively between the two deflection rollers (1, 2), and having a drive spindle which is arranged coaxially with the work spindle of the machine. What is essential here is that the drive spindle is arranged substantially axially parallel between the deflection rollers (1, 2) and is connected directly to the work spindle and, for drive purposes, to one of the deflection rollers (1) and that the axis of the work spindle is at the same time the axis of the drive spindle. As a result, a simple, compact unit is provided which can be automtically exchanged into the work spindle which can be integrated, for example, in one or more swivel axes of an NC machine. <IMAGE>
