The invention proposes a method and an apparatus for removing mould cores (23) made of glass, ceramic, moulding sand or the like from castings. In this method, the mould core (23) is granulated by the action of ultrasound by means of at least one transmission element (21 - sonotrode). In an apparatus suitable for carrying out the method, an ultrasound generator (18) is in operative connection with the transmission element or elements (21), a working region (22) of the transmission element, which region can be moved into the mould core (23) to granulate the latter having essentially the same cross-section as the mould core (23). By means of this method, significantly higher working speeds and lower noise development can be achieved, the space requirement for the ultrasound device likewise being considerably smaller than that of conventional apparatuses. <IMAGE>
