Nitrogen monoxide and nitrite ions are amperometrically sensed by electrocatalytic reduction using electrodes (15) modified with an electronically conductive polymer film such as poly(N-methylpyrrole), which is doped with mixed heteropolyanions of formula [MIIIX1W11O39(H2O)]?n- or [MIIIX¿22W17O61(H2O)]7-, wherein M is Fe, Rh, Al, Ga, In or Tl, X1 is P or As and n is 4, X1 is Si or Ge and n is 5, X1 is B and n is 6, and X2 is P or As. The films and modified electrodes used are also disclosed.
