Apparatus for generating an animated sequence of pictures, which comprises: means for storing data defining one or more pictures, said data defining one or more lines which, when displayed, define a said picture; means for reading said stored data and for generating therefrom a sequence of further pictures; and means for editing said stored data so as to amend said picture and means for storing local reference system data. The line defining data defines the position of portions of the line relative to a first local reference system (P2), and the means for storing line data is arranged to store data relating to the position of a portion of a line so as to allow said portion to be influenced by a second local reference system (P1).
