The invention relates to a rescue procedure for a person who has fallen overboard from a ship which is used in particular in the merchant service on the high seas. The person has an emergency (radio) transmitter, which can be activated automatically by sea water, and/or a radar transponder which enable the person to be located immediately and the alarm raised automatically. After the alarm is raised, a floating or submersible body containing lifesaving equipment is launched and is directed automatically or by remote control to the person. A rescue measure of this type can be carried out very quickly and automatically.
