An electrical fence apparatus is described having a charge capacitor (C1) and a switch (4) which is pulsed by a timer T and discharges the charge capacitor (C1) (which is charged via a transformer to a preferably constant value) via a fence transformer (3) to a fence which is connected to the secondary of said fence transformer (3). The fence state is determined indirectly from the measurement of the electrical current or the voltage after a discharge pulse, by means of a sensor (S), this information being evaluated in a downstream-connected control section (St) in such a manner that the type and magnitude of the fence load are determined. The pulsed switch is interrupted during the discharging process as a function of the fence load whilst the discharge energy has reached a value which can be predetermined. <IMAGE>
