<p>Acicular magnetic iron based alloy particles for use in magnetic recording media contain in the vicinity of the surfaces of said particles from 1.5 to 10 mol% of B (calculated as B) based on the amount of Fe and from 1.5 to 10 mol% of Co (calculated as Co) based on the amount of Fe and have a saturation magnetization of not less than 125 Am<2>/kg (125 emu/g) and a Switching Field Distribution (S.F.D.) value of not more than 0.50.</p>
