ARTICLE THAT CONSISTS OF OPTICAL GAIN DEVICE

PURPOSE: To provide a waveguide which has an excellent matching property of the dopant atom distribution to the mode field of the signal light in a planar waveguide and induces an excellent gain characteristic and a production of such waveguide. CONSTITUTION: The product having the optical gain device which consists of the planar waveguide doped with rare earths(RE), is nonuniformly distributed with dopants in the core 12 of the waveguide and is optically pumped is provided. The RE ions are so distributed that the ions are concentrated to the core region of the relatively high mode intensity of both of the signal light and the pumping light. The RE ions are approximately concentrated to the central core region in the preferable embodiment of the single mode planar waveguide. The process for producing such product is disclosed as well. The process comprises implanting the RE ions into the core region.
