The present invention relates to a method and to apparatus for machining the edges (2) of natural stone slabs (1) to give them an uneven appearance, like that of old slabs, these edges joining the main decorative face (3) of each slab (1) along the substantially rectilinear edge (4), the method being characterised in that a grinding wheel (5) driven in rotation about its axis (6) is applied to the edge (4), a relative movement between the grinding wheel (5) and the slab (1) is caused in the direction of its edge (4) while keeping the grinding wheel (5) in contact with the edge (4) of the slab (1), and during the relative movement between the grinding wheel (5) and the slab (1) the depth of penetration of the grinding wheel (5) into the slab (1) is varied so as to convert its substantially rectilinear edge (4) into an irregular edge with greater or lesser amounts of machining. <IMAGE>
