PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display element which is high in scattering characteristic low in driving voltage, superior in gradation characteristic and is equipped with wide angle of visibility characteristics. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal layer 18 composed of nematic liquid crystal, of which dielectric anisotropy is positive, and which is sandwiched between substrates 11 and 12 provided with two electrodes 13 and 15, and rubbing processing with liquid crystal molecules oriented in tilt is performed to the surfaces of substrates. Then, this liquid crystal display element is provided with a condition (a) that the intersecting angle of liquid crystal molecule arranging directions 11a and 12a on two substrates is theta(0 deg.<=theta<=90 deg.), in the case that a cell twist angle decided so as to make uniform twist arrangement of a liquid crystal component by the tilt orientation on two substrate surfaces is phi, when the phi is + or -theta in the state without impressing any voltage to the liquid crystal component, the twist angle omega of liquid crystal is + or -theta+180 deg. or pitheta-180 deg. and when the phi is + or -(theta-180 deg.), the liquid crystal twist angle omega is + or -theta (the above mentioned codes are in the same order) and a condition (b) that one picture element is provided with two kinds of areas or more finer than 30mum and making a pretilt angle different as well and the pretilt angle of faced parts between upper and lower substrates is made different. |
