[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrode comprising a conductor surrounded by a depolarizer is made by forcing the conductor while in a plastic condition into an opening in the depolarizer. The conductor may consist of a mixture of graphite, lampblack or other form of powdered carbon with paraffin oil. The electrode is made in a machine which moulds the depolarizer and the plastic conductor and connects the two together. A device may also be provided for embedding a contact wire in the conductor during the moulding process. Fig. 2 shows the part of the machine for moulding the conductor and embedding the contact wire therein. A mixture of graphite and oil is placed in a mixer 4 from which it is expelled by a screw 5 into a chamber 6 from which it is forced into a mould 34 by a piston 7. Heating and cooling devices 14, 15 are provided. The wire 11 for forming the contact is supplied from a drum 12 and passes through a device 40 which causes only a predetermined length of wire to be supplied at a time. The wire passes through a nozzle 10 and is drawn centrally into the mould 34 by the moving plastic material and the wire and plastic material are cut simultaneously by a shear 13. The lengths of moulded material with the embedded wires pass out of the mould and fall down an inclined channel 18 where they are arrested by a stop 20 and cut to the required length by a shear 21. The stop 20 then frees the rod of plastic material which slides down a channel 22 into a slide 41 and is ready to be forced into the opening of the depolarizing mass which is made from material taken from a container and compressed in a mould 23 round a core 27, the pressure being obtained by a hollow member 26 as shown in Fig. 4. The end of the core 27 is provided with a passage 32 to receive the projecting end of the wire 11 embedded in the plastic material forming the central conductor. The latter is forced into the central opening of the depolarizing mass by a ram 31, Fig. 2, the core 27 receding at the same time as shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 1 shows the finished electrode comprising the projecting contact wire 3, central plastic conductor 2 and depolarizer 1. |
