An additive composition for use in a highly concentrated coal-water slurry, having as essential components thereof (a) a water-soluble copolymer obtained by using as essential components (I) at least one vinyl monomers represented by the general formula I: <CHEM> wherein A<1> and A<2> are independently H, methyl, or -COOX, providing that A<1> and A<2> are not simultaneously -COOX, A<3> is H, methyl -COOX, or -CH2COOX, providing that A<1> and A<2> are independently H,or methyl when A<3> is -COOX or -CH2COOX, R<1> is -CO- or -CH2CO-, R<2> is alkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, n is a number in the range of 1 to 100 on the average, R<3> is a monovalent organic group selected the class consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, and heterocyclic compounds, and X is H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, or alkylamines, and (II) at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid monomers represented by the general formula II: <CHEM> wherein B<1> and B<2> are independently H, methyl, or -COOY, providing that B<1> and B<2> are not simultaneously -COOY, B<3> is H, methyl, -COOY, or -CH2COOY, providing that B<1> and B<2> are independently H or methyl when B<3> is -COOY or -CH2COOY, and M and Y are independently H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, or alkylamine, in a weight ratio of vinyl monomer (I)/unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (II) in the range of 0.5/99.5 to 15/85, in a total amount of said vinyl monomer (I) and said unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (II) accounting for a proportion of not less than 60% by weight of the total of all the monomers used in the water soluble copolymer and (b) an electrolytic compound of which the anion moiety has a chemical formula weight of not more than 500 and the anion moiety has a chemical formula weight of not more than 100 per electric charge. n |
