The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the production of activated carbon, wherein a carbon-containing starting material is activated under the action of heat and the supply of activating gases, in which the activation of small amounts of carbon-containing starting material of differing origin is possible with thermal utilisation of the waste gases of activation and simultaneous generation at high efficiency of the steam necessary for the activation process. For this purpose it is provided that the carbon-containing starting material is charged into a furnace chamber having an activation shaft, the furnace chamber is exposed to a first heat energy, the waste gases of activation are conducted to an afterburner chamber and are there burnt, and the heat energy produced in the afterburner chamber is fed as second heat energy through the furnace chamber to a heat exchanger, with the furnace chamber (26) consisting of a plurality of furnace sections, in which a heat-resistant, tubular preferably vertically arranged activation shaft (28), preferably comprising sintered ceramic, is arranged, each furnace section is provided with a burner, the waste gas channel (62) branches off from a first furnace section (18), and the outlet opening (44) for the waste gases of activation is connected to an afterburner chamber (48) whose outlet (59) is connected to an inlet (54) of a second furnace section (14). <IMAGE>
