A device and a method for monitoring a pilger mill have a crankshaft which drives rolls for a back and forth movement in order to reduce a tube by means of a mandrel. A linear sensor which is connected to the mandrel supplies a mandrel-position signal. A rotary sensor which is connected to the crankshaft supplies a crankshaft-angle signal. A processor for linking the mandrel position signal and the crankshaft-angle signal supplies a characteristic of the mandrel movement signal for the tube reduction.
