The invention relates to a sorption process for air conditioning vehicles, especially electric vehicles, and an appliance for operating the process. To obtain rapid cooling or heating in air conditioning of vehicles while achieving improvements in manufacture and cost and weight benefits it is proposed that the sorption unit, which is composed of a storage vessel containing sorbent, a stock vessel containing sorbate and a vapour duct connecting the vessels with one another, be evacuated, by means of a vacuum pump, only as required each time for an adsorption process to proceed, and be ventilated for the purpose of desorption. During desorption, the sorbent arranged in the storage vessel has hot air flowing through it which, humidified with sorbate (solute), after having flowed through, is discharged past the reservoir vessel to the outside, via a vent line branching off from the vapour duct.
