The invention relates to a method for operating a motor vehicle having an electronically controlled, continuously variable transmission (CVT = continuously variable transmission), wherein it is possible that: - during downhill driving, the transmission is continuously adjusted to substantially maintain the vehicles speed using engine-braking and/or - the transmission is adjusted to control slip, and/or - continuous adjustment of the transmission occurs, during braking to supplement the braking of the motor vehicle, and/or - by means of a manually operated actuating device a continuous adjustment of the transmission ratio occurs. Downhill driving is detected particularly by sensing engine throttle angle (6) and longitudinal acceleration of the vehicle by operating on a vehicle velocity signal (5). The system also senses brake operation (7), wheel slip (14) and operation of an "inching" control (20) to give incremental ratio changes in an up to down direction.

|
