The invention relates to a device or a ventilator for controlling the flow rate of a flowing medium by means of a valve (1) whose valve opening can be varied via closing means, and a first control loop 20 having negative feedback. The control variable produced by the control loop controls the closing means in such a manner that the difference between the desired and actual value for the flow rate tends to zero. In order to be able to achieve rapid changes in the flow rate with a high control accuracy, at least one second control loop (30) is provided, to which the control variable of the first control loop (20) is supplied as a desired value. The actual value for the second control loop may be, for example, the measured position of the closing means. The bandwidth and gain can be optimised for each control loop (20, 30).
