Treated pillared clay (I) is obtd. by (i) contacting a clay (II) with an NH4+ ion source to exchange Na and/or Ca ions, (ii) contacting the exchanged clay with a fluorine source to replace OH gps. in the clay, (iii) contacting the clay with a pillaring agent to obtain a fluorine contg. pillared clay and (iv) contacting with an inorganic acid to impregnate and/or incorporate part at least onto the clay. Clays obtd. by the prepn. are further claimed.
