PURPOSE:To improve heat resistance and strength by incorporating carbon coated specified inorg. fibers and a specified matrix. CONSTITUTION:Phenolic resin having 500-20,000wt. average mol.wt. is impregnated into inorg. fibers and fired at 600-1,000 deg.C in an inert gaseous atmosphere to obtain carbon coated inorg. fibers. A mixture of 100 pts.wt. polymer of an organometallic compd. with 0-900 pts.wt. silicone resin for a matrix is then impregnated into the carbon coated inorg. fibers and fired at 800-1,500 deg.C in an inert gaseous atmosphere to obtain the objective inorg. fiber reinforced ceramic composite material consisting of inorg. fibers and a matrix. The inorg. fibers are made of an amorphous material consisting of Si, M (M is Ti or Zr), C and O or a crystalline material of <=50mum grain size made of beta-SiC, MC, a beta-SiC-MC solid soln. and/or MC1-x (0<=x<=1). The matrix is made of an amorphous SiO2-MO2 aggregate or mixture. |
