The conveying apparatus with a conveyor belt (6) for piece goods (3) has a supporting track (1) for the piece goods (3) which extends in the longitudinal direction of the conveyor belt (6). Located underneath the supporting track (1) is a channel (4), in which the conveyor belt (6) rests on a channel bottom (5) and in which the latter is movable in the running direction (9) without touching the piece goods (3). The conveyor belt (6) is provided, on its underside facing away from the supporting track (1), with thickenings (7) attached at longitudinal intervals and resting on the channel bottom (5). These thickenings (7) raise the conveyor belt (6) and bring it into temporary frictional connection with the piece goods (3) for the purpose of driving the latter. The thickenings (7) can also be attached at longitudinal intervals to the top side of the conveyor belt (6) facing the supporting track (1). Since the moved conveyor belt (6) is not in constant contact with the piece goods (1), only a slight pull is necessary in order to move it forwards. The dynamic pressure when the foremost item of piece goods is retained by a stop is therefore also slight. <IMAGE>
