The present invention relates to a device for creating water hammer in a pipe, characterised in that it includes moving gear (100) which can, under the action of a given force which breaks a shaft (122) to be broken which shaft holds this gear back, move inside a sleeve (110, 118) arranged laterally relative to the pipe to be tested (12) and emerging into the latter, the moving gear including at a first end, an operating piston (102) on the front face (124) of which this given force is exerted, and, at a second end, an injection piston (104) whose effective cross-section is smaller than that of the operating piston and at the front of which there is an injection volume Vi to be injected into the pipe and intended to create the water hammer. The force of displacement of the moving gear is generated by the pressure exerted by an operating gas introduced into an operating chamber (128) covering the front face of the operating piston (102) and integral with the sleeve (112), the moment of breakage of the shaft (122) to be broken which connects this front face to an element (126) which is stationary but can slide in a wall opposite this chamber being predetermined merely by the mechanical properties of the shaft. <IMAGE>
