An engine (3) drives the pump (8) of a torque converter (7), the turbine (11) of which is connected to the crown wheel (16) of a planetary gear train (13), the spider (18) of which is connected to the output of the transmission. The pump (8) is connected to the planet wheel (14) of the planetary gear train (13). The crown wheel (16) is mounted on a free wheel (22) preventing rotation in the backwards direction. Upon start up, the power passes through the planet wheel (14) into the gear train (13) which acts as a mechanical reduction gear with the crown wheel (16) immobilised by the free wheel (22). Then the torque transmitted by the converter to the crown wheel (16) exceeds the reaction torque which is strictly necessary, the crown wheel (16) progressively equalises its speed with that of the planet wheel (14). The gear train (13) operates as an adder of the powers received mechanically on the planet wheel (14) and hydraulically on the crown wheel (16). A direct automatic take off (23) is provided.
