PURPOSE:To provide a tunnel junction element which is provided with a good characteristic without a defect such as a pinhole or the like by using an oxide superconductor. CONSTITUTION:A tunnel junction element in which an oxide superconductor 2, an insulator 3 and a superconductor 4 are laminated is provided with a structure in which an insulating layer is composed of a calcium oxide. Consequently, when the calcium oxide layer is used, it becomes clear that the surface of the oxide superconductor can be covered completely with the insulating layer which is uniform and extremely thin at several nm. Consequently, an SIS junction can be constituted of the oxide superconductor. When a high-critical- temperature oxide superconductor is used as a superconducting electrode, an SIS junction-type Josephson element can be operated even at the temperature of liquid nitrogen.
