Process for the extraction of nickel, cobalt and manganese from suspensions of their ores such as laterite, saprolite and manganese nodules, in an acidic aqueous solution under irradiation of the solution with electromagnetic energy such as microwaves. The acid may be hydrochloric acid, sulphurous acid and/or sulphuric acid and the acidic solution may be mixed with high concentrations of halite and of magnesium ions for better control of the dissolving of the magnesia in the ore.
