The present invention relates to an automatic multifunctional machine and a method of extracting plants, checking them during their transfer, pricking them out and packing them. It consists of the combination of an automatic machine including a station for extraction and selection (1) by a screw which is retractable, rotary and axially mobile, with optical checking (19) and removal of the unsuitable plants (6), a station for transfer by gravity and for pricking out, a station for preparation of the receiving elements (3) in which pre-holes (29) are made in the soil receiving the plants, a station for sorting the receiving pots (28), eliminating and recycling the pots which contain no plant (6), and a station for packing (5), into which the packagings (40) which receive a number of receiving pots (28) are introduced from underneath. It relates to the horticultural sector in general and is intended in particular for large concerns which carry out pricking out and packing of young plants on an industrial scale. <IMAGE>
