PURPOSE:To generate a backing part matching the style and feeling of music. CONSTITUTION:A backing kind table memory is stored with an indication of rhythm backing or non-rhythm backing corresponding to a combination of the style and strength of music and a melodic or rhythmic condition. The rhythm backing or non-rhythm backing is determined by referring to a backing kind table on the basis of arrangement conditions inputted from an input device. For the rhythm backing, a backing pattern is generated at the timing of a rhythm pattern in a rhythm pattern memory and for the non-rhythm backing, backing part is generated at the timing of a change in chord in a chord progression memory.
