PURPOSE:To provide an optical system capable of preventing heat generation by preventing light unnecessary for display from being radiated to a liquid crystal panel even when numerical aperture is lowered with the increase of picture element density in a projection type liquid crystal display device using a small-sized and high-density liquid crystal panel. CONSTITUTION:This device is provided with the liquid crystal panel 101 where picture elements and a 1st light shielding layer 102 are arrayed in a matrix state, and a 2nd light shielding layer 103 arranged on the same optical path as the panel 101 at a distance therefrom and having array which is point symmetry to the array of the picture element. Furthermore, since the optical system 104 arranged so that the image of the layer 103 may be formed as an inverted image on the panel 101 is used in the device, light absorbed in the light shielding layer of the liquid crystal panel is cut by the layer 103 located this side, thereby realizing the projection type liquid crystal display device which is thermally stable even in the case of a small-sized and high-density LCD. |
