A method is specified for setting the smoothness and/or gloss of a material web which is led through a roll nip arrangement, in which an actual value of smoothness and/or gloss of the material web is determined after the roll nip arrangement in the running direction and compared with a desired value and the quantity of steam emitted by the steam spray pipes is changed zone by zone as a function of the difference between desired value and actual value. In this method, the setting of the steam application is to be simplified. For this purpose, a constant steam pressure is set for all zones together on at least one material web side and, in the case of a difference between the desired value and actual value in the machine direction, the degree of opening of the valves of all the zones is changed by the same value, the valves being designed as analog and linearly controllable valves, in particular linear valves.
