The production of sulphuric acid from the SO2 in flue gases and similar waste gases by conventional processes has numerous problems, in particular - high losses as a result of side reactions - round-about route via SO2-enriched gas - problems with impurities - low degree of removal of the SO2 from the flue gases - only sulphuric acid of low concentration can be prepared - expensive chemicals required. The process is to alleviate these problems. Sulphuric acid is produced by the decomposition of ammonium sulphate, particularly from flue gas purification. The ammonium sulphate is first decomposed into ammonium hydrogen sulphate and ammonia, then the hydrogen sulphate is decomposed into water and ammonium disulphate (pyrosulphate) and this is subsequently decomposed into ammonium sulphate and sulphur trioxide.
