Proposed is a method of preparing monochloroacetic acid with a reduced dichloroacetic acid content by heat treatment of the raw monochloroacetic acid in the presence of a non-noble metal and subsequently distilling the reaction products. The purified monochloroacetic acid is suitable, in particular, for use as an alkylation agent in the preparation of amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants.
