Film or film tube made from casein, process for the production thereof, and the use thereof

The invention relates to a process for the production of a film or film tube made from casein by a) mixing an aqueous solution containing at least one partially volatile carboxylic acid, at least one plasticiser and demineralised water, with casein, and allowing the mixture to swell; b) shaping the swollen mixture obtained in a) at temperatures of from 60 DEG C to 100 DEG C to give a film or a film tube; c) solidifying the film or film tube by treatment with an aqueous curing solution and, if necessary, by cold smoking; d) drying the film or film tube. Films and film tubes obtainable by the novel process have excellent packaging properties and are biodegradable. They are particularly suitable for use as edible casings for sausage products, packaging material for non-hygroscopic, pulverulent or fat-containing products, and for tablets and aroma-containing dry products, in the production of seed tapes and adhesive tapes and for the lamination of paper.
