This invention relates to a handwriting recognition engine for a pen computer, trained to recognise graphically input characters. It is arranged to cause a single screen font to be displayed when the input could be one of several inherently ambiguous characters, for example the letter 'o' and the number '0'. The screen font adequately represents all of the several inherently ambiguous characters.
