<p>A phosphonocarboxylate ester of formula (I) in which the groups R are alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R1 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 8 carbon atoms or a group of formula (a), where Y is an alkylene group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R14 is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; X represents a methylene group, a substituted methylene group or a vinylidine or substituted vinylidene group; and n is 0 or 1; or a diphosphonate ester of formula (b) is used as a flame retardant. It is particularly suitable for polyurethane or polyisocyanurate foam and can for example be added to the polyol from which polyurethane foam is formed.</p> |
