Method and composition for treating aluminium and aluminium alloy melts

A method for removing metallic trace impurities from melts of aluminium and its alloys is described. It is based on the in situ formation of chlorine in statu nascendi, which is released from a mixture of anhydrous aluminium chloride and chlorates and/or perchlorates of the alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals in the melt and reacts preferentially with the contaminating alkali metals and/or alkaline earth metals.
