A method and a device for controlling the secondary air fed to the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine and a method for the diagnostic checking of the said device are indicated. The device contains an electrically driven secondary air pump, which is operated in at least two stages as a function of operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. The secondary air feed can thereby be adjusted with a precision determined by the number n of stages to the current value of the quantity of exhaust gas delivered by the internal combustion engine.
