<p>A process is disclosed for the conversion of a compound selected from itaconic acid and citric acid to citraconic anhydride, said process comprising the step of contacting itaconic acid or citric acid at a temperature between 90° and 400 °C with 10 to 500 wt%, based on itaconic acid or citric acid, of a liquid medium having a boiling temperature above 100 °C at atmospheric pressure and which comprises at least 0.01 to 200 wt%, based on itaconic acid or citric acid, of a tertiary amide compound for a period of time sufficient to convert at least some itaconic acid or citric acid to citraconic anhydride. The process according to the present invention has the advantage that it is carried out in a liquid medium, so a regular heat transfer takes place. Furthermore, high conversions are obtained.</p> |
