Described are compounds of the formula (I) in which R<1> is a hydrogen atom or the grouping Z-Y-X [in which X is a -CH2- or an NH group, Y is a -CO- or -SO2- group and Z is a C1-6 alkyl group or a ring of formula (II); R<2> is a phenyl group, a C1-10 alkyl group or a C3-10 monocyclic or bicyclic hydrocarbon residu; R<3> is a C1-6 alkyl or C3-6 cycloalkyl group; n is the number 0, 1 or 2; R<4> is a phenyl, C1-6 alkyl or C3-6 cycloalkyl group and R<5> is the grouping -K-L-M (in which K is a -CO- or -CHOH- group, L is -CH2- or -O- and M is a C1-6 alkyl or C3-6 cycloalkyl group, plus methods of preparing them. The compounds of the formula (I) inhibit the action of the natural enzyme renin.
