495,962. Silencing gaseous currents; air-cleaners. SERVAIS, F. J. J. May 22, 1937, No. 14292. [Class. 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] A silencer, also serving as a filter, particularly for the air intakes of internal-combustion engines, air compressors, &c., but which may also be used as an exhaust-silencer, comprises a plurality of unobstructed passages disposed radially in a transverse plane at one end, or intermediate the ends, of a further main passage, all the passages being surrounded with soundabsorbing material. The Figure shows an intake silencer comprising a casing 10 with a sleeve 11 for connection to the intake pipe, and having a central passage 12 surrounded by sound-absorbing material 13, which may be as described in Specification 447,376. Leading into one end of the passage 12 are a series of radial inlet passages 17, each surrounded by sound-absorbing material. The end plate 16 of the casing may be lined with rubberized asbestos or felt. The radial unit may be separate from, and of greater diameter than, the axial unit. Also a radial unit may be connected to two axial units, one at each side thereof and leading to two air intakes. |
