A flat or curved surface of plastic or glass is dyed or otherwise adapted to exhibit high attenuation of light emissions over most of the visible spectrum, but to have reduced attenuation within one or more selected light emission pass bands matched to the light emission wave bands of the display illumination source. The disclosed deadfront colour filter permits construction of an automotive instrumentation display having reduced transmission of ambient light flux and providing a "deadfront" appearance when de-activated, while allowing transmission to the observer of intended display images. |
