PURPOSE:To stably fill a recording head with ink in such a state that an air bubble is not mixed with the ink after only an ink tank is replaced or the ink tank and a recording head are replaced. CONSTITUTION:An ink filling device is equipped with a cap covering the surfaces of the nozzles 2a of a recording head 2 and having an ink discharge port 4a provided thereto, the volume change type negative pressure suction pump 6 connected to the ink discharge port 4a of the cap through a communication member and allowing negative pressure to act on the surfaces of the nozzles 2a of the recording head 2 through the cap and a waste ink recovery tank 7 recovering the waste ink sucked by the negative pressure suction pump 6. When the ink passage volume of the recording head 2 is set to V1, the ink passage initial volume composed of the initial volumes of the cap, the communication member 5 and the negative pressure suction pump 6 is set to V2 and the suction volume change quantity of the negative pressure suction pump 6 is set to V3, the conditions of V3 >=V1X1.5 and V3>=9>=V2>=V3 are satisfied. |
