PURPOSE:To obtain the subject element useful as a sheetlike optical source, capable of emitting blue color, having excellent uniformity, stability and small electricity consumption for its emission, comprising an organic substance layer containing a specific viologen-based compound between a pair of electrodes wherein either one is (translucent) transparent. CONSTITUTION:This element contains one or more organic substance layers comprising one or more viologen-based compounds selected from compounds of the formula (Ar is 6-18C aromatic hydrocarbon or 4-14C heterocyclic aromatic group; X<-> is a pair anion; R1 to R10 are H or 1-20C alkyl) such as 2,5-bis(N- methyl-4-pyridinium)thiophene dibromide between a pair of electrodes wherein either one is (translucent) transparent. |
