The instant invention is a method of coupling compounds comprising the steps of: a) forming a maleimide derivative by reacting a maleimide containing compound having the formula: (* CHEMICAL STRUCTURE *) with an amine functional compound capable of displacing the N-hydroxysuccinimide group; and b) reacting the derivitized maleimide of step (a) with a second amine functional compound.
