The method and device make it possible to measure the phonometric characteristics of a telephone apparatus. The device comprises a generator (18-28) of an excitation signal which is intended to be applied to the input of the apparatus (16), means (36) for sampling and for digitising the output signal from the apparatus, and means for processing the digitised signal supplying the spectral energy distribution of the output signal and for comparing this signal with the excitation signal. The generator (18-28) supplies a multi-sine signal and the processing means perform a digital Fourier transform giving the distribution of the output power as a function of frequency and compare the output spectrum with the multi-sine spectrum applied. <IMAGE>
