Device and method of protecting individual items of baggage (3) by cladding each item of baggage (3) in a package (11) made from at least one thermoplastic film (1), each package (11) or half-package hugging the shape of the item of baggage (3) to be protected under the effect of a heat source. The device is characterised in that each film (1) is stored on a feed reel (4) and has cuts (10) which are transverse with respect to the longitudinal feed axis of the film (1), two adjacent transverse cuts (10) delimiting a portion of the said film (1) serving as a package (11) or half-package for the item of baggage (3) to be protected, and each package (11) is sufficiently flexible and large to be folded at its centre along the longitudinal feed axis of the film (1) or each half-package is sufficiently large that the package (11) or the half-packages are present above and below and that it or they laterally overlap the item of baggage (3) to be protected such that when a heat source is applied the thermoplastic package (11) or half-packages hug the totality of the shape of the said item of baggage (3).
