<p>Taking cuts from a workpiece (1) especially in the form of a sheet, by means of a tool guided by a data processing system, according to a programme for taking cuts which may depend on some special features of the said workpiece or on instructions associated with the said workpiece, the said data processing system controlling and being connected to a camera, especially a video camera, responsible for exploring the said workpiece (1), the process providing, before the said exploration, for some of the said special features or instructions to be marked directly on the said workpiece by an operator with the aid of a marking means, in the form of distinctive signs (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which can be detected by the said camera and can be interpreted as being constraints or suggestions for cutting out to be taken into account in the said programme for taking cuts. The said means of marking is fluorescent and, during its exploration by the said camera, the said workpiece is illuminated by a source of ultraviolet light and is placed before a fluorescent background and the speed of exploration of the said camera can be adjusted as a function of the required sensitivity, for example from 10 to 40 images per second, that is a frequency of exploration of 10 to 40 Hz, preferably approximately 25 Hz.
