In heating devices of this type it can occur that the heating in a functionally impaired catalytic converter has no effect on the rate of conversion for the reduction of pollutants, so that virtually untreated emissions are discharged. The new heating device, on the other hand, has the characteristic feature that the catalytic converter is formed from two sets of catalysts, between which a catalytic converter chamber exists, that the burner exhaust gases flow into the catalytic converter chamber, mix there with the internal combustion engine exhaust gas and heat the second catalytic converter insert in the direction of flow. With the measures according to the invention a high pollutant conversion rate and a lower exhaust gas emission after engine cold starting are achieved, even in an already aged catalytic converter.
