PURPOSE:To improve focus detecting accuracy by using a light diffusing plate and to detect focus even when the contrast of an object is low or when defocusing amount is large. CONSTITUTION:A light diffusing means 80 varying diffusivity is arranged on or near the intended focusing surface of a photographing lens 51 in a focus detector provided with a photoelectric conversion means 56 having at least a pair of photodetectors 56a and 56b, focus detecting optical systems 53, 54, 55a and 55b conducting at least a pair of luminous fluxes passing through the different areas of the lens 51 to the conversion means 56 and forming a pair of object images on a pair of photodetectors 56a and 56b, and an arithmetic means detecting relative deviation between a pair of object images on a pair of photodetectors 56a and 56b and calculating the defocusing amount between the image forming surface and the intended focusing surface of the lens 51. |
