PURPOSE:To provide the simple matrix driving type liquid crystal display device having an excellent response characteristic. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device is constituted by arranging cholesteric liquid crystal layers 13, 23 above and below two sheets of substrates 12, 22 clamping a liquid crystal layer for driving. These upper and lower cholesteric liquid crystal layers 13, 23 exhibit a characteristic reflection in a 400 to 1400nm wavelength region when light is made incident in parallel with the torsional axis thereon. The liquid crystal display device has a light source 31 behind the lower cholesteric liquid crystal layer 23. As a result, the liquid crystal display device which can make high-fineness display in large capacity by simple matrix driving and is short in response time is obtd. |
