In a process for purifying a flue gas containing nitrogen oxides and other pollutants and originates from a refuse incineration plant, in which process the flue gas is fed to an at least single-stage purification in which the flue gas is increasingly cooled along a treatment section at least by impingement with atomised liquid and at least some of the pollutants are removed from the cooling flue gas by scrubbing and the scrubbed flue gas and liquid are led off, it is provided, in order to carry out cooling, denitration and scrubbing in combination in a simple manner in terms of the process, that the nitrogen oxide contained in the hot flue gas is removed by reduction with addition of ammonia or an ammonia precursor along a part-section of the treatment section covering a predetermined temperature range and the flue gas is then scrubbed. <IMAGE>
